Community Update 3/25/20


Dear Warrior Run Community,

On Monday, Governor Wolf announced that schools would be closed through April 6th with the possibility of an extension depending on the status of the COVID-19 crisis over the next few weeks.  Given that the school closure has been extended, our District has prepared a Continuity of Education Plan that includes Distance Learning Days (DLDs).  The purpose of this plan is to the best extent possible, deliver content and provide opportunities for teachers and students to regularly make contact as we navigate these uncertain times. 
Components of the plan include a combination of remaining essential content standards and enrichment activities for students to complete during the closure.  Beginning Monday, March 30th, our DLDs will begin with teachers providing assignments and resources for students through Google Classroom, Sapphire Class Pages, e-mail, or another platform already established by the classroom teacher.  Specific instructions will be shared by your child(ren)’s classroom teacher over the next few days.  While our intent is to deliver as much of the content/activities virtually, paper packets will be provided as requested, particularly for families without internet access.  Information on distribution of paper packets will be provided directly to families once they are prepared.  Reminder – Chromebook pick-up is scheduled for all students in grades 4-6 for tomorrow (Thursday), March 26th from 9:00am-11:00am in the middle school lobby.
Please know that during DLDs, teachers at all levels will be available during regular school hours to provide assistance, hold live sessions, and touch base with our students & families.  School counselors and psychologists will be available to offer counseling and assist students with social and emotional needs.  Special education teachers and other support teachers will also be working with students and families to coordinate regular times to provide support and assistance.  All other professional staff are developing plans to provide supports and interventions according to the needs of our students.
Weekly attendance will be tracked during DLDs, and a student’s attendance will be based on completion of assigned work and/or participation in class discussion sessions.  Our faculty, staff, and administration are prepared to assist our students to ensure that they are successful in completing their work during the extended school closure.  We recognize that many of our families may be working during the day and may be assisting their child(ren) outside of the regular school day.  In light of the current circumstances, we are prepared to offer flexibility with attendance and expectations, however, our hope is that our community and families will work with us to also ensure that all students are completing work and engaging with their teachers on a regular basis.  The last thing we wish to do is overwhelm our students, families, and school community as we roll-out the DLDs in a time that is already filled with stress and uncertainty.
Specific questions related to the school calendar, make-up days, graduation, etc. are still being discussed based on the guidance we are receiving from the State and PDE.  We will continue to reassess our plans based on that guidance and will work together to make decisions surrounding these topics accordingly.  As the decisions are made, they will be communicated with our entire school community. 
This is new to everyone, including our faculty and staff who are eager to reconnect with our students.  We recognize that the first week of implementation may be challenging, however, we ask for your patience and understanding.  We also welcome your feedback as we will be seeking ways to improve our distance learning plan for as long as the school closure continues.  In the meantime, if you have a specific need, please do not hesitate to contact your child(ren)’s building principal, school counselor, or any member of our leadership team.  Thank you for your cooperation and support!
