About 5th Grade Guidance

Warrior Run Middle School Counselors provide an opportunity for the 5th grade students at Warrior Run Middle School. Middle School Counselors teach a 5th grade class in the Creative Arts rotation once every six school days. The class is designed to help increase the students' personal/social and career awareness.  

 

1st Marking Period:

In the first marking period, students will focus on self discovery. More specifically, students will learn self-management skills, social skills, and gain career awareness. By the end of the first marking period, students will have the ability to:

  • Apply appropriate speaking and listening techniques used in conversation.
  • Connect personal interests and abilities and academic strengths to personal career options.
  • Discuss the vocabulary words with the counselor and other students.
  • Demonstrate advocacy skills and ability to assert self, when necessary.
  • Demonstrate personal safety skills.
  • Create positive and supportive relationships with other students.

 

2nd & 3rd Marking Periods

In the second and third marking periods students will focus on careers. More specifically, students will learn about career awareness, acquisition, retention, advancement, and entrepreneurship. By the end of the third marking period, students will have the ability to:

  • Describe the impact of individual interests and abilities on career choices.

  • Describe the impact of personal interest and abilities on career choices.

  • Relate the impact of change to both traditional and nontraditional careers.

  • Describe the factors that influence career choices.

  • Describe how personal interests and abilities impact lifelong learning.

  • Connect personal interests and abilities and academic strengths to personal career options.

  • Apply to daily activities, the essential workplace skills.

  • Identify the risks and rewards of entrepreneurship.

  • Discuss the steps entrepreneurs take to bring their goods or services to market.

  • Identify individualized career portfolio components.

  • Define the elements of a career portfolio and its usefulness.

  • Prepare a draft of career acquisition documents.

  • Develop a personal schedule based on activities and responsibilities at both home and school. 

 

 
4th Marking Period 
In the fourth marking period, students will focus on exploring interests and careers. More specifically, students will learn about relating personal interests to career choices, career preparation and career awareness. By the end of the fourth marking period, students will have the ability to:
  • Describe how personal interests and abilities impact lifelong learning.
  • Connect personal interests and abilities and academic strengths to personal career options.  
  • Describe the impact of individual interests and abilities on career choices.
  • Identify and review resources available in researching job opportunities
  • Describe the range of career training programs in the community
