SEARCH ENGINES
It is very important that you search the internet carefully. Some search engines will be better than others for different information. ALL information on the internet isn't accurate. Be sure and check the site carefully.
It is best to search using Keywords. Instead of "What post-secondary education do I need to become a nurse?" Use: "post-secondary, education, nurse."
Yahoo www.yahoo.com Best used as a directory.
AltaVista www.altavista.com Word search; searches web and newsgroups
Google www.google.com Click the button "I'm feeling lucky" to find specific businesses, schools, etc.
Go www.go.com Can search web, newsgroups, and FAQS, email addresses, current news, company listings; can also ask questions of it.
Excite www.excite.com Great when you don't know the exact term you need; is conceptual/finds related topics; can ask questions of it.
HotBot www.hotbot.com Can find sites with specific technology, such as sites that use Flash. Shockwave, or Java.
About www.about.com This is an entirely different search tool--it was created by humans whose face you can see and contact. Specialists search the web for the best sites, categorize them, and maintain the lists.
Ask Jeeves www.ask.com Ask "natural" language, such as "What's the difference between apple cider and apple juice?"
Search.Com www.search.com Provides access to a wide variety of search services.
Northern Light www.nlsearch.com Some of the results from their special collection cost a refundable fee; this site organizes the results for you.
If you need help searching these sites, ask your librarian, Mrs. Oberlin!
